The integration of OST (original soundtrack) with movies plays a vital role for the Music industry there is also another concept royalty wherein songwriters and publishers are paid for the use of their song as background music for a movie, TV show, or commercial. Internationally (Hollywood) music and movies go hand-in-hand this helps in unification of the two industry into a MEGA entertainment industry. In many instances in Hollywood movies scenes incorporate OST’s which give a defined meaning to the act/scene which otherwise couldn’t best be resembled to name a few :Bad Boys by Inner Circle as OST for Bad Boys, OST track list for You Got Served and specific scene wise the track ’heaven was a mile away’ for the part David (Omarion) and Elgin (Marques Houston) split up and form their own crews. Imagine the same act/scene without an OST the emotion would be hanging loosely with a feeling of something is lacking, wouldn’t it? Hollywood is known for such integration of OST’s whereas in Bollywood such a concept must have started off lately. Since inception the music in Bollywood forms a part of the movie itself. This interdependence of movie-music interception is a core function especially when music (HIP HOP) is treated as a culture. The above two movies (Bad Boys, You Got Served) have made a hysterical mark in Hip Hop. In this era the three heads (Hollywood/Bollywood/Music) although are interrelated are perplex in nature and are profound on which of the individual carries more wieghtage to have an influence or to impact the other. The movie Slumdog Millionaire (2008)(Hollywood-Bollywood combo) brought home the music mogul A.R Rahman Oscar awards.
Bollywood have recently picked up the 1st gear and have made best attempts to mix hip-hop within its scope but have never put it in the mainstream. Hip Hop in Bollywood has never picked hype although BIG UP to the efforts of various artists ‘Singh is King’ track RDB featuring Snoop Dogg, rapper Blaaze composed and performed in the video for the title song of the film 99.9fm, rapper Bohemia featured in the track ‘Chandni Chowk To China’, music composed by Ishq Bector ‘Karle Gunaah’ for Ugly Aur Pagli. The Hindi music performed by Indian artist Lata Mangeshkar called Thoda Resham Lagta Hai couldn’t have possibly ever marked to be a hip hop type of form until the Godfather of hip hop Andre Young aka Dr Dre brought in a fusion and produced for the track ‘Addictive’, Bappi Lahiri filed a suit against Dre mentioning the track was a product of ‘cultural imperialism’ now that’s where royalty stands. The tycoon Timbaland has also experimented with the stems of Indian music & vocals on tracks like ’ Indian flute’, ‘Get Ur Freak on’. Dancehall king Sean Paul has also jammed with classical Indian music riddims
on "Street Respect". The most controversial track by Eric Sermon has also used Hindi hook Sample: Kisii ko khudkhushii kaa shauk ho to kyaa kare vo. You can look at music from various angles (Hip Hop – Bollywood) and if you have the right approach no one can say it does not go, there is no feel to Hip Hop and Bollywood. Hip hop in India is at a minority level, shouldn’t Indian artists be exploiting the Indian music from Bollywood rather than international artist for it to sound tribal.
Hip Hop is an independent industry it is not dead in India as commercial use of the culture indicated by rapper Nas -‘Hip Hop is Dead’ but the interdependence cannot be overlooked. It is not about imitating the West but being original and making the roots of the culture get an international recognition. An interlink amongst the three (Hollywood/Bollywood/Hip Hop) is something that has not been experienced and an intent of collision will have a great appeal to audience.
Hip Hop in India is NOT DEAD... Especially till m alive... As far as d film industry is concerned, i think d main backdraw is INDIAN MENTALITY. A typical Indian will never understand what Hip Hop is about... Dey only know how 2 speak marathi n join shiv sena
